Portals Vells by Boat: The Classic Cove Trip from Palma

If Mallorca had a postcard cove for boat days, it would be Portals Vells. Tucked into the south-west corner of the Bay of Palma near Cap de Cala Figuera, it combines everything guests ask for: calm water, pine-covered cliffs, a small beach and something to explore.

What makes Portals Vells special

• Shelter. The cove faces away from the strongest summer winds, so it often stays calm when other spots get choppy.
• The sea cave chapel. On the southern side a cave was carved into the sandstone centuries ago — you can swim or paddle over and look inside.
• Colours. Sandy patches turn the water bright turquoise, framed by dark green pines.
• Neighbouring coves. The smaller beaches around the headland are just a short hop away if the main bay is busy.

How long does it take?

From Port Adriano it is a short run around the corner — ideal for our Frauscher 858 on a half day. From Palma the cruise along the coast takes a little longer and passes Illetes and Cala Major on the way, which makes it a relaxed full-day plan or a longer half day on Extasea or Cienfuegos.

When to go

Portals Vells is popular. In July and August the cove fills up around midday, especially at weekends. Our captains like two timings:

• Early start — arrive mid-morning, pick the best sandy spot to anchor, swim before the crowds.
• Late afternoon — most day boats head home, the light turns golden and the water is at its warmest.

June and September are the sweet spot: warm water and noticeably fewer boats.

Anchoring and rules

The seabed has large areas of protected Posidonia seagrass, where anchoring is not allowed. Your captain anchors on sand only and keeps outside the buoyed swimming zone near the beach.

What it costs

• Cienfuegos (up to 11 guests): high-season full day €2,200 + fixed Portals Vells fuel surcharge €250.
• Extasea (up to 9): full day €1,750, half day €850, fuel at cost.
• Frauscher 858 from Port Adriano (up to 7): half day €500, self-drive with licence or + €150 skipper.
