Booking a Yacht Direct vs. on a Platform: Is It Safe?

Many of the yachts you find on SamBoat, Airbnb or GetYourGuide are run by small local operators — like us. When you book through a marketplace, you get the same yacht and the same captain, but you also pay for the platform. So is it safe to skip it? Usually yes, if you check a few things first.

What a platform actually does for you

• Discovery: it shows you many boats in one place.
• Reviews: it collects ratings from previous guests.
• Payment handling: it takes your money and pays the owner later.
• A fee: marketplaces charge commission and service fees, which end up in the price you pay.

What it does not do: maintain the boat, hire the captain, provide the insurance or decide the route. That is always the operator.

Why booking direct is often better

• Faster, real answers — you talk to the people who run the boat, on WhatsApp.
• Flexibility — tapas, drinks, water toys, a specific route or a birthday setup are arranged directly.

How you stay protected when you book direct

Pay the deposit by credit card. Card payments come with chargeback rights from your card issuer if a service is not delivered. That is the same kind of protection a platform gives you. Avoid paying large amounts in cash in advance or through untraceable channels.

1. Company details on the website — name, tax number, address.
2. The exact boat — model, name and marina, with real photos (not stock images).
3. A written price breakdown — charter, fuel, skipper, extras, deposit.
4. Insurance and licence — ask whether the boat is licensed and insured for commercial charter.
5. A clear cancellation and weather policy — ours: free cancellation up to 24 hours before departure, and a new date or full refund if the captain cancels for safety.
6. Independent reviews — Google reviews or the same boat’s ratings on a platform.
7. Card payment possible — for your deposit.
